Tracing Lace
These depict elements of lace; a material that resonates beauty, delicacy and the sensuous pleasures of a culturally desired femininity. Used to decorate and adorn, this work is concerned with lace’s structures, spaces and sumptuous surfaces which fragment gradually as it both conceals and reveals.
The digital images break down in parts as accidental elements of the printing production interfere in the mark making process and the technological perfection of photography reveals the uncertain world of drawing. The surface begins to rub away and overflows from one to the other as we detect things in between the tracings. As the light penetrates slowly through, the works become reminiscent of x-rays, the lace underwear coverings seeming to work their way inside the body, suggesting images of internal organs and nerve endings both repelling and absorbing these feminine foreign objects.
